Week 35: Let’s talk about sex … baby’s that is

If you’ve been following along on my weekly prenatal updates, you’ve heard that Lee and I decided to keep Birdie’s sex a surprise. (If you haven’t, now you know!) I already covered the reasons why way back in week 22, which seems like forever ago. And I haven’t had any hesitations or regrets about that decision … until recently.
With five weeks left, the anticipation is building, and just this week, I was dying to know if we were having a son or a daughter. The feeling was intense. However, the moment passed (thankfully!), and I’m back to being content with our surprise bundle. Even so, it’s been interesting to see how our hunches have changed over time.
When Lee and I talked about our future kiddos prepregnancy, we always imagined ourselves with a rowdy bunch of boys. I don’t know why exactly. Maybe because he’s one of two boys, and his dad is one of three. That’s just where our minds went, and we were happy to follow them along on that daydream.
Once I actually became pregnant, we spent months saying we had no clue. And, really, how could we know unless it was some sort of gut instinct? As time passed, we both had this inkling that MAYBE Birdie was a girl—even as more and more people kept saying they thought we were having a boy. (I can be pretty stubborn when I want to be, so I think that only added to my “it’s a girl” theory.) We stuck by our random inkling until around the end of the second trimester when Lee decided he once again had no idea. But now, he’s back on the girl bandwagon with me.
To make matters more confusing … and funnier … our friends, who recently had a beautiful baby girl, went through a very similar experience, only the opposite of ours. Prepregnancy, they thought girl. During pregnancy, they swapped to boy pronouns. And in the end, they had a daughter. (My friend did tell me that as her baby was entering the world, she had this realization that she had a daughter flash across her mind—before her husband ever confirmed it. How cool is that? It was like her mother’s intuition kicked in right on time.)
Another friend of mine recently saw a photo of me and my bump on Instagram and said as soon as she did, the thought hit her: There’s a boy in there.
I’m wondering if I’ll experience some similar sort of premonition before I can see for myself. Or maybe, I’ll think it’s a girl until somebody tells me otherwise. Or maybe, I’ll switch gears in the last few weeks and guess boy with everyone else and their brother. Who knows?
So, I’d love to know … whether you found out during an ultrasound or in the delivery room, did you have a strong hunch beforehand? Did you know you were having a boy or a girl? And did your prediction pan out in the end?
