Week 19: Home sweet remodel

Since we had all of our big exciting baby appointments last week, this week has been pretty quiet. We’ve turned our attention to our other needy baby … our house!

In addition to all this “growing a human being business,” we’ve been furiously chipping away at some much needed home remodeling work. It all started with me NEEDING (not wanting, mind you) a farm sink to bathe our sweet little newcomer in. My one request turned into new countertops, paint, backsplash, shelving and flooring, of course.

We painted the baby’s room last year, so I wasn’t feeling a huge rush to start in there. The only other major work that needs done is flooring, so we’ve got time.

Our house is 107 years old, so we’ve been working diligently to get it back to its glory. It was remodeled in 2008, but with newer/hip/trendy pieces, rather than what speaks to the home’s history.

We spent the better part of week 19 tracking down salvaged oak flooring that matches the size and shape of what is in the original part of our house—not an easy task! All of the new wood flooring is giant and beautiful. We need teeny, tiny, skinny pieces like they had in 1910.
Lo and behold, we found some, and it was on sale! We (my husband and the blessed employees of Orr Reed Wrecking Company) loaded up Lolita, my SUV, to the brim with 165 square feet of 100-year-old oak and went on our way.
My dear, sweet husband unloaded all of it by himself, and it is now sitting in the baby’s room getting acclimated to the humidity of the house before we have a historic home restoration company come in and install it. (My husband is Mr. Handy and could do it himself, but they’re going to be here anyway doing some major exterior work, so we’re just knocking it out in one go with some professional help.)

Needless to say, I am excited about all the changes to our home before baby comes! It sure is nice having an excuse not to have to lift really heavy stuff, too. Thanks, baby!
